Eric Miller Description: Mpumalanga Province, Kabokweni Phaphamani Home Based care organisation Started by Charlotte Mtetwa and a group of women driven by their religious commitment in this rural village, the organisation launched a programme of community healthcare that sought to care for the ill physically and emotionally and to increase peoples understanding of HIV/Aids. Following the burial, outside his home, the local residents partake of a meal cooked by the family with food provided by local support organisations. Achmat, HIV+, a long time Aids activist has taken the stand that he will not make use of anti retrovirals as long as they are not available to HIV+ South Africans generally at affordable prices. Mandela said he plans to meet President Thabo Mbeki to discuss the availability of the drugs to HIV+ people. August 2002 Aids activist, Sindiswa, belonging to TAC (Treatment Action Campaign), joined other TAC activists and volunteers on a Community Day of Action. TAC volunteers spread through the local townships to distribute pamphlets and condoms to residents on a day earmarked to raise awareness of the issues in these communities . Activists in different communities handed out information, condoms, painted TAC and HIV/Aids slogans on walls. In some areas they hepled clean up litter and garbage on the streets or staged marches in various areas around Cape Town. Eric Miller Description: Mpumalanga Province , near Mooiplaas Masakhane School, Pupils in Aids awareness class In an impoverished area of the province, students at the school take an active interest in maintaining standards of excellence both academically and in their school environment. The school encourages staff and pupil involvement in keeping the school clean and running various programs such as school feeding scheme, a plant nursery and sewing project for income generation. The school has been recipient of Impumelelo Award for innovation and excellence in public sector projects.
