Description: Malawi, Mua A malnourished baby breastfeeds in mothers arms at the Nutritional Recovery Unit of Mua Hospital. Malawi is facing massive starvation in the face of continuing food shortages. Aid organisations continue to appeal for assistance to avert an impending catastrophe in the Southern African region. Over 3 million Malawians are at risk and aid agencies are currently feeding half million of these. Food shortages in about six of the regions countries have been either caused or exacerbated by several factors, such as mismanagement of resources, (often blamed on flawed IMF (International Monetary Fund) policies foisted on these countries), political corruption or ineptitude, destructive internal policies (such as the Zimbabwe land reforms ousting productive hite farmers) and the HIV/aids pandemic. All of thesse have been compounded by the drought experienced in the region this year. Photo Eric Miller August 2002
